Review of the fantastic film Archive / "The Creator"
Archive / "Creator" - a beautiful and sad fantasy story with elements of Greek tragedy and cyberpunk, filmed in the style of the genius Moon / "Moon 2112" by Duncan Jones. And this coincidence is not accidental. Archive director Gavin Rothery worked on Moon as a concept artist and designer.

Archive is Gavin Rothery's first major directorial work. He also acted as a screenwriter and producer of the film. In general, Rothery got into cinema from the video game industry, and his first directorial job was the creation of the opening video for Titanfall from Respawn Entertainment. In addition, Rothery has worked as an artist on games such as Fable, Grand Theft Auto III, Battalion Wars, and Bionicle Heroes. And, cherry on top, Gavin Rothery did concept art and ship designs for the infamous Star Citizen Chris Roberts.
The story told in the Archive is actually very simple and echoes the same Ex Machina by Alex Garland and Morgan by Luke Scott. The main character of the film, a talented robotics engineer George Elmore (Theo James), lives in an old hard-to-reach base and is engaged in a certain project commissioned by a large corporation. But George is working on completely other tasks that he hides from his superiors. The robotics company consists of four living beings: the dumb and armless hulking robot J1; a more advanced robot J2, which can dream, and in terms of intellectual development corresponds to a teenage girl; and even cooler robot J3, suspiciously similar to the deceased wife of George. But what kind of fourth living creature there is at the base, you will find out a little later.

Despite the glaring discrepancy between the English and Russian / Ukrainian title of the film, in this case I would not rush to accuse the localizers of a careless attitude to work. Rather, on the contrary, by changing the name so drastically, they did the audience a favor by hiding the main secret of the film, which its authors too clearly stuck out.
Review of the fantastic film Archive / "The Creator"
Interestingly, the unexpected plot twist in the finale, which many reviewers for some reason consider the main advantage of Archive, is actually easy to calculate. The authors scattered so many clues across the database that even a blind person should notice them. So, alas, from the point of view of the Archive plot, it is indeed very predictable and, surprise-surprise, this is not the story of Pygmalion and Galatea at all, although fragments of this Greek myth are indisputably here, as they are in almost all books and films about robots.
Review of the fantastic film Archive / "The Creator"
The artist Gavin Rothery is primarily a visionary and the Archive value in his imitation of the style of science fiction films and illustrations of the 70s. last century. Of course, someone will say that from the point of view of design and sterility of the picture Archive is just a re-shot of Moon / Luna 2112, but this is not entirely true.
Yes, Rothery is friends with Duncan Jones and they worked together on the visual part of Moon. But Moon, in turn, draws on the classic films of the last century, and so does Archive. In the design of the base itself, the inscriptions and indicators, the appearance of the robots and the interfaces, there is a clear influence of the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick and Alien by Ridley Scott. Speaking specifically about Moon, Archive is more related to her feeling of loneliness and alienation of the protagonist from humanity, and not stylistics. Although there are undoubtedly overlapping base designs here.
Review of the fantastic film Archive / "The Creator"
In general, Archive is worth looking at, if only for the design of the base and robots. Rothery built a full-size model of this base in Budapest, in which the bulk of the filming took place. As for robots, these are not CGIs, but real models with living people inside. In the large J1 - designer Chris Schubert, in the smaller J2 - the former Cirque du Soleil artist Timaeus King Madai. J3 was played by Stacy Martin.
Review of the fantastic film Archive / "The Creator"
In general, Stacy Martin has three roles in the film and she coped with all of them perfectly. The star of the controversial two-volume Nymphomaniac / "Nymphomaniac" by Lars von Trier (Volume I, Volume II) played in Archive the wife of the protagonist, Jules Elmore; Galatea-J3 and gave the voice of jealous Galatea-J2. In general, J2 is perhaps one of the most alive characters in the film, which you empathize with more than others.
As for the leading actor Theo James, whom you could see in the infamous Divergent / Insurgent / Allegiant series and the equally meaningless Underworld: Blood Wars, he clearly does not pull the role he inherited. Until Sam Rockwell in Moon, he is like heaven. However, as far as I understand, there was not much to choose, Theo James was one of the producers of the film.
Review of the fantastic film Archive / "The Creator"
And while I personally enjoyed watching Archive without noticing nearly two hours of timing, overall it's a leisurely and predictable film. It is worth watching only for the sake of the visual part and three transformations of the actress Stacy Martin. And yes, English is best. Although Archive / "Creator" got into limited distribution, in Ukraine it hit the first week after the opening of cinemas, so the film hardly collected a good box office. However, the picture is still shown in some Kiev clubs.
